U.S. Not Winning War in Iraq, Bush Says for 1st Time - washingtonpost.com
The motherfucker doesn't have a fucking clue.
U.S. Not Winning War in Iraq, Bush Says for 1st Time - washingtonpost.com: "As he searches for a new strategy for Iraq, Bush has now adopted the formula advanced by his top military adviser to describe the situation. 'We're not winning, we're not losing,' Bush said in an interview with The Washington Post. The assessment was a striking reversal for a president who, days before the November elections, declared, 'Absolutely, we're winning.'"

Jesse Jackson :: Congress must insist Bush isn't above law
Bush and his men drove us into the war of choice in Iraq, distorting intelligence to gain public support and undermining our credibility across the world. His policies led directly to the disgraces of Guantanamo Bay and Abu Ghraib. His assertions have trampled the rights of American citizens, as well as those from other countries. Lack of accountability squandered billions in taxpayer dollars on waste, fraud and abuse of major contractors in Iraq. The list goes on.
Bush's remarkable assertions would make the president an elected king. That is not what the founders intended. They wrote the Constitution to create a system of checks and balances to limit presidential power. They gave Congress the right to declare war, arguing that "no one man" should ever have that power in a republic. They passed the Bill of Rights to guarantee rights to the people.
CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Jesse Jackson :: Congress must insist Bush isn't above law: "How do we hold presidents accountable when they trample these limits? Presidents cannot be indicted. They are immune from civil lawsuits on the basis of their official actions. The only recourse in the Constitution is impeachment."

Early ‘Maybe’ From Obama Jolts ’08 Field
Obama/Edwards or possibly Obama/Clinton would make a great combination IMHO.
Early ‘Maybe’ From Obama Jolts ’08 Field - New York Times
The declaration six weeks ago by Mr. Obama, an Illinois Democrat, has set off a surge of interest in Democratic circles, which party officials expect will only be fueled in the coming week as Mr. Obama prepares for a day of campaignlike events in New Hampshire next Sunday.

Bush the worst ever president
I would love to see this motherfucker hanging from the gallows at the Hague.
He's The Worst Ever - washingtonpost.com: "Historians are loath to predict the future. It is impossible to say with certainty how Bush will be ranked in, say, 2050. But somehow, in his first six years in office he has managed to combine the lapses of leadership, misguided policies and abuse of power of his failed predecessors. I think there is no alternative but to rank him as the worst president in U.S. history."

NYT Finally getting real
Mr. Bush’s lack of curiosity was well known even before he became president, but as time has gone on and bad news has mounted, that disinterested quality has turned into a stubborn refusal to hear bad news. The country simply cannot afford it any longer. Three years of having Mr. Bush trust only his gut has plunged Iraq into bloody chaos and done untold damage to America. There needs to be an urgent change in policy.
Bush, Maliki and That Memo - New York Times: "The president’s advisers need to tell him all the harsh truths about Iraq in the vivid terms they require; they need to tell him how little time he has left to act. This administration has been orchestrating a foreign policy disaster of epic proportions, and history will remember both that the president failed to hear the warning bells and that many others failed to ring them loudly enough. The president’s advisers need to tell him all the harsh truths about Iraq in the vivid terms they require; they need to tell him how little time he has left to act. Daddy bush can't stand the criticism--who the fuck cares?
None of the bush crime family ever earned an honest dime in their life nor spilled a drop of blood in any of the wars they've had their fingers in. Daddy bush needs to head on back to Houston and have a nice cup of SHUT THE FUCK UP. The American public and the rest of the world have had enough of this clan for a lifetime.
Elder Bush takes on son's Arab critics - Yahoo! News: "We do not respect your son. We do not respect what he's doing all over the world,' a woman in the audience bluntly told Bush after his speech.
Bush, 82, appeared stunned as others in the audience whooped and whistled in approval.
A college student told Bush his belief that U.S. wars were aimed at opening markets for American companies and said globalization was contrived for America's benefit at the expense of the rest of the world. Bush was having none of it.
'I think that's weird and it's nuts,' Bush said. 'To suggest that everything we do is because we're hungry for money, I think that's crazy. I think you need to go back to school.'"

The chickens come home to roost. The blame game continues.

Counting the Vote, Badly
If there ever was a no-brainer this is it. If Congress does not fix this problem before the 2008 election we're screwed.
Counting the Vote, Badly - New York Times: "Fortunately, that may be about to change. With the Democrats now in control of both houses, there is an excellent chance of passing tough electronic voting legislation. Representative Rush Holt, Democrat of New Jersey, had more than 200 co-sponsors for a strong electronic voting bill before this month’s election, and support is likely to grow in the new Congress. Baker's panel has 'no magic bullet' to end the agony
Bailing junior out is nothing new to daddy Bush so its no surprise that calling in the cavalry, i.e. James Baker et.al. to somehow provide an excuse for junior to move on from the mess he's made and fuck something else up. That's the story of his life so why should Iraq be any different.
Baker's panel has 'no magic bullet' to end the agony | Special reports | Guardian Unlimited: "The Democratic victory last week may help to lead to a consensus if it makes the White House more open to compromises, but whether there is general agreement or not, the bottom line stressed by Mr Baker is that there are no good options left in Iraq, just bad options and worse ones. "

They must be playing 'spin the bottle' in the whitehouse to see what the excuse of the week will be. They haven't came up with 'they're sitting on OUR oil' yet but if the truth were known that is probably 99% accurate.
Bush Says U.S. Pullout Would Let Iraq Radicals Use Oil as a Weapon - washingtonpost.com: "As he barnstorms across the country campaigning for Republican candidates in Tuesday's elections, Bush has been citing oil as a reason to stay in Iraq. If the United States pulled its troops out prematurely and surrendered the country to insurgents, he warns audiences, it would effectively hand over Iraq's considerable petroleum reserves to terrorists who would use it as a weapon against other countries."

They're not going to use any razor wire in this moat around Baghdad but maybe if they imported some alligators to breed and propagate it would solve the problem. Ohio Congressman Is Said to Agree to Plead Guilty - New York Times
One by one the criminals that plague this administration and the cancer they have created in our government will get their just reward. Hopefully in the near future Mr. Ney will join Duke Cunningham in a jail cell and soon to be followed by Tom DeLay. With the Congress expected to turn left in November perhaps these investigations and subsequent convictions will be speeded up.
Ohio Congressman Is Said to Agree to Plead Guilty - New York Times
Mr. Abramoff pleaded guilty in January to conspiring to corrupt members of Congress and other public officials. The scandal was among the factors that led Representative Tom DeLay of Texas, the former House Republican leader, who had been close to Mr. Abramoff, to resign in June, his aides said at the time.

Even Bushes afraid of Katherine Harris
Hopefully she'll drag other repuglicans down with her in the upcoming election as she goes down in flames. What a fitting end for that bitch.
Even Bushes afraid of Katherine Harris: "While Harris was a lifesaver for the Republicans in 2000, she's a lightning rod now, not to mention 'erratic' and 'emotional' -- synonyms for bonkers, which is how her former staff describes her on the record. 'Tantrums. Minor things cause her to blow,' Glenn Hodas said to the Miami Herald after he quit her campaign. 'She doesn't take advice. Micromanaging to the nth degree.'"

Greenwald's `Iraq for Sale' veers off the small-film path | Chicago Tribune
When Greenwald's new film, "Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers," goes up for sale on DVD at the end of this month, millions of people will already know about it, a lot of them through the network of progressive mailing lists that Greenwald's Brave New Films has been able to tap.
Tens of thousands will already be signed up for a series of independent screenings, most of them in people's homes, the week of Oct. 8. And some smaller number than that will have seen it in a very limited theatrical play, which started this week in New York and Los Angeles.

"Baghdad's morgue almost tripled its count for violent deaths in Iraq's capital during August from 550 to 1,536, authorities said Thursday, appearing to erase most of what U.S. generals and Iraqi leaders had touted as evidence of progress in a major security operation to restore order in the capital."

US Congressional Report Highlights Intelligence Gaps on Iran's Nuclear Program
'Recognizing Iran as a Strategic Threat: An Intelligence Challenge for the United States,' released this week by House intelligence committee chair, Pete Hoekstra is another blatant attempt to fit policy around a bunch of unsupported so-called facts.
"The report gives, I think, an exaggerated view of what Iran is actually doing, and then it turns around and criticizes the intelligence services for not coming to the same conclusion that they have come to," Sick said. "And that looks very much like the kind of process that we had prior to the invasion of Iraq, and the one that came in for such tremendous criticism after we went into Iraq. I would really hate to see us going down that road a second time."
VOA News - US Congressional Report Highlights Intelligence Gaps on Iran's Nuclear Program: "But Sick, who currently teaches Middle Eastern affairs at Columbia University in New York, says the House Intelligence Committee report released Wednesday is riddled with inaccuracies, including a statement that 'Iran is currently enriching uranium to weapons grade' at the country's Natanz nuclear facility.
'Well, that site is actually under inspection by the IAEA, and it has produced thus far probably less than a gram of enriched uranium, and that enriched uranium is not at weapons grade. They [the committee] are simply making statements that are not true,' he said."

Major arms soar to twice pre-9/11 cost
"The estimated costs for the development of major weapons systems for the US military have doubled since September 11, 2001, with a trillion-dollar price tag for new planes, ships, and missiles that would have little direct role in the fight against insurgents in Afghanistan and Iraq."
"Controlling the long-term costs of the Pentagon's arsenal are very nearly as complex as restraining the cost of government entitlements like Social Security and Medicare," the analysis said.
Major arms soar to twice pre-9/11 cost - The Boston Globe
Hey, when you're in the killing and maiming business and when you have financial interest in the war machine mega-companies why not get on the bandwagon and fill your pockets while the filling is good. After all, that's what this criminal administration and their congressional cronies do best. Oh for the good old Vietnam days when the cheap stuff like agent orange and napalm delivered by WWII aircraft did enough killing and maiming to satisfay any warmonger.
At least entitlements like Social Security and Medicare return a benefit for what we pay for. What benefit do our citizens get from dropping smart bombs using the latest thing in hardware on helpless civilians in foreign lands? Oh, we're killing them over there so we don't have to kill them over here. BULLSHIT

Iraq faces fuel crisis amid the violence
"Iraqi officials announced plans to double the amount of money spent to import fuel to combat the country's worst oil and gasoline shortages in years. Much of the fuel crisis is due to insurgent attacks on convoys and on Iraq's fragile pipeline network, Oil Ministry officials said."

Nationwide statistics during the past three years suggest that U.S. efforts to secure Iraq aren't succeeding.
"When L. Paul Bremer, then the top U.S. representative in Iraq, appointed an Iraqi Governing Council in July 2003, insurgent attacks averaged 16 daily. When Saddam Hussein was captured that December, the average was 19. When Bremer signed the hand-over of sovereignty in June 2004, it was 45 attacks daily. When Iraq had its elections for a transitional government in January 2005, it was 61. When U.S. forces killed Abu Musab al Zarqawi in June, it was up to 90."

Insurgent Bombs Directed at G.I.’s Increase in Iraq
“The insurgency has more public support and is demonstrably more capable in numbers of people active and in its ability to direct violence than at any point in time.”
"Along with a sharp increase in sectarian attacks, the number of daily strikes against American and Iraqi security forces has doubled since January. The deadliest means of attack, roadside bombs, made up much of that increase. In July, of 2,625 explosive devices, 1,666 exploded and 959 were discovered before they went off. In January, 1,454 bombs exploded or were found. An analysis of the 1,666 bombs that exploded in July shows that 70 percent were directed against the American-led military force, according to a spokesman for the military command in Baghdad."

Roberts and Alito Misled Us
A great article by Senator Edward Kennedy.
"The careful, bipartisan process of years past -- like so many checks and balances rooted in our Constitution -- has been badly broken by the current Bush administration. The result has been the confirmation of two justices, John G. Roberts Jr. and Samuel A. Alito Jr., whose voting record on the court reflects not the neutral, modest judicial philosophy they promised the Judiciary Committee, but an activist's embrace of the administration's political and ideological agenda."
Roberts and Alito Misled Us: "Roberts and Alito Misled Us"
"We need to remember what this process is all about. It is good to hear that a nominee has a loving family, faithful friends and a sense of humor. It is important to know that nominees possess the intellect, life experience and discipline that make a good judge. But it is essential that we learn enough of their legal views to be certain that they will make good on the simple promise etched in marble outside the Supreme Court: "Equal Justice Under Law.""

At the heart of the Lebanon crisis lie the lethal mistakes of George Bush
Instead of pursuing a Middle East peace deal, the White House's big idea has been to bomb people into democracy
"But the record of failure goes deeper than that. It began in the president's first week, when Bush decided he would not repeat what he perceived as his predecessor's mistake by allowing his presidency to be mired in the fruitless search for Israeli-Palestinian peace. Even though Clinton had got tantalisingly close, Bush decided to drop it. While Henry Kissinger once racked up 24,230 miles in just 34 days of shuttle diplomacy, Bush's envoys have been sparing in their visits to the region.
The result is that the core conflict has been allowed to fester. Had it been solved, or even if there had been a serious effort to solve it, the current crisis would have been unimaginable. Instead, Bush's animating idea has been that the peoples of the Middle East can be bombed into democracy and terrorised into moderation. It has proved one of the great lethal mistakes of his abominable presidency - and the peoples of Israel and Lebanon are paying the price."

U.S. Speeds Up Bomb Delivery for the Israelis - New York Times
The Israel/Hezbollah war which is one of the early skirmishes of WWIII is damn good for business in the good old USA. So why would bush and the republican congress wish to oppose the killing when its putting money in their pockets. American supplied airplanes flown by Israeli pilots dropping hardware onto innocent civilians. What a cash cow this is if you're into the killing and maiming business.

Iraqi Prime Minister Denounces Israels Actions
Now what do we do? It looks like the string must have broken on bush's puppet.
"The resentment of the Iraqi government toward Israel calls into question one of the rationales among some conservatives for the American invasion of Iraq — that an American-backed democratic state here would inevitably become an ally of Israel and, by doing so, catalyze a change of attitude across the rest of the Arab world."
Iraqi Prime Minister Denounces Israels Actions - New York Times: "His stance is noteworthy because it is a significant split with American policy toward Israel. It has been the Americans hope that Iraq would become President Bushs staunchest ally among Arab nations. The Americans arranged a series of elections that ended up putting Shiite parties in power, and the White House helped boost Mr. Maliki by pushing last spring for the ouster of the prime minister at the time, Ibrahim al-Jaafari. Mr. Maliki relies on the presence of 134,000 American troops in Iraq to stave off the insurgency led by Sunni Arabs, who ruled over the majority Shiite Arabs for decades."

Lieberman Hopes His Fate Isn't Sealed With a Kiss
What goes around comes around Joe. What did you expect?
Lieberman Hopes His Fate Isnt Sealed With a Kiss - New York Times
Privately, other leading Democrats have been quick to catalog what they consider to be Mr. Lieberman’s slights to the party over the years — including his mild-mannered performance in his vice-presidential debate against Dick Cheney in 2000; his rejection of a filibuster that would have opposed the nomination of Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the Supreme Court; and his on-air chumminess with Sean Hannity, the conservative co-host of “Hannity & Colmes” on Fox News. His willingness to run for re-election as an independent is merely the latest offense.

Wiretap Surrender: "SENATE JUDICIARY Committee Chairman Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) has cast his agreement with the White House on legislation concerning the National Security Agency's warrantless surveillance as a compromise -- one in which President Bush accepts judicial review of the program. It isn't a compromise, except quite dramatically on the senator's part. Mr. Specter's bill began as a flawed but well-intentioned effort to get the program in front of the courts, but it has been turned into a green light for domestic spying. It must not pass."

Snow can spin more bullshit than a Texas cattle rancher.
Bush's style of diplomacy: Texas plain talk - Yahoo! News: "Although he is often portrayed as a bit of a bull in a china shop, White House spokesman Tony Snow credited Bush with 'a chess player's ability to think several moves ahead' in his dealings with foreign leaders.
'He tries to figure out what incentives are going to appeal to people to inspire them in a way that we think is helpful and right. It's a real gift and it's something you don't see unless you are on the inside,' Snow said."

Bush told Cheney to discredit diplomat critical of Iraq policy
The revelation that Mr Bush instructed Mr Cheney to personally oversee the campaign to discredit Mr Wilson arrives at an inconvenient time for a White House vehement in criticising leaks.
Last month it condemned as "disgraceful" a report in the New York Times that agents from the CIA and treasury departments had been secretly monitoring international wire transfers without court oversight.
Guardian Unlimited Special reports Bush told Cheney to discredit diplomat critical of Iraq policy: "President George Bush directed his vice-president, Dick Cheney, to take personal charge of a campaign to discredit a former ambassador who had accused the administration of twisting prewar intelligence on Iraq, it emerged yesterday."

WWFFD? Who cares?
"Laws and institutions must go hand in hand with the progress of the human mind," Jefferson wrote in 1816. "As that becomes more developed, more enlightened, as new discoveries are made, new truths discovered and manners and opinions change, with the change of circumstance, institutions must advance also to keep pace with the times. We might as well require a man to wear still the coat which fitted him when a boy as civilized society to remain ever under the regimen of their barbarous ancestors."
WWFFD? Who cares? - Los Angeles Times: "The real American question of our times is how our country in a little over 200 years sank from the great hope to the most backward democracy in the West. The U.S. offers the worst healthcare program, one of the worst public school systems and the worst benefits for workers. The margin between rich and poor has been growing precipitously while it has been decreasing in Europe. Among the great democracies, we use military might less cautiously, show less respect for international law and are the stumbling block in international environmental cooperation. Few informed people look to the United States anymore for progressive ideas."

Greg Palast nails the burning cross caucus of the Republican Party
"Don't kid yourself: the Republican party's decision yesterday to 'delay' the renewal of the Voting Rights Act has not a darn thing to do with objections of the Republican's white sheets caucus.
Complaints by a couple of good ol' boys to legislation have never stopped the GOP leadership from rolling over dissenters.
This is a strategic stall that is meant to decriminalise the Republican party's new game of challenging voters of colour by the hundreds of thousands.
In the 2004 presidential race, the GOP ran a massive, multi-state, multimillion-dollar operation to challenge the legitimacy of black, Hispanic and Native American voters. The methods used breached the Voting Rights Act, and while the Bush administration's civil rights division grinned and looked the other way, civil rights lawyers began circling, preparing to sue to stop the violations of the act before the 2008 race.
So Republicans have promised to no longer break the law - not by going legit but by eliminating the law."

Ten hours of debate for a 3+ year war. That boils down to 250 dead service men and women for each hour. How gracious of these pathetic clowns to show such compassion. Does that mean they'll debate through lunch also?
GOP Measure Forces House Debate on War: "'I can't help but feel through eyes of a combat-wounded Marine in Vietnam, if someone was shot, you tried to save his life. . . . While you were in combat, you had a sense of urgency to end the slaughter, and around here we don't have that sense of urgency,' said Rep. Wayne T. Gilchrest (Md.), a usually soft-spoken Republican who has urged his leaders to challenge the White House on Iraq. 'To me, the administration does not act like there's a war going on. If you're raising money to keep the majority, if you're thinking about gay marriage, if you're doing all this other peripheral stuff, what does that say to the guy who's about ready to drive over a land mine?'"

Hillary Clinton: Too Much of a Clinton Democrat?
"The last thing we need is yet another Democrat afraid to stand on principle."-- Markos Moulitsas
Hillary Clinton: Too Much of a Clinton Democrat?
The operation is rudderless, without any sign of significant leadership. And to top it off, a sizable number of Democrats don't think she could win a general election, anyway.
Can Hillary Clinton overcome those impediments? Money and star power go a long way, but the netroots is now many times larger than it was only three years ago, and we have attractive alternatives to back (and fund), such as former governor Mark W. Warner and Sen. Russell Feingold.

Senate Hearings on Bush, Now
Carl Bernstein, one of the distinguished investigative journalists of the Watergate era writes this compelling article suggesting Senate hearings on Bush. It should be a must read for anyone unfamiliar with Watergate and its similarities to the Bush presidency.
"There was understandable reluctance in the Congress to begin a serious investigation of the Nixon presidency. Then there came a time when it was unavoidable. That time in the Bush presidency has arrived."
VANITY FAIR : FEATURES : CONTENT
"There will forever be four indelible photographic images of the George W. Bush epoch: an airplane crashing into World Trade Tower number two; Bush in a Florida classroom reading from a book about a goat while a group of second-graders continued to captivate him for another seven minutes after Andrew Card had whispered to the president, "America is under attack"; floodwaters inundating New Orleans, and its residents clinging to rooftops for their lives; and, two days after the hurricane struck, Bush peeking out the window of Air Force One to inspect the devastation from a safe altitude. The aftermath of the hurricane's direct hit, both in terms of the devastation and the astonishing neglect and incompetence from the top down, would appear to be unique in American history. Except for the Civil War and the War of 1812 (when the British burned Washington), no president has ever lost an American city; and if New Orleans is not lost, it will only be because of the heroics of its people and their almost superhuman efforts to overcome the initial lethargy and apparent non-comprehension of the president. Bush's almost blank reaction was foretold vividly in a video of him and his aides meeting on August 28, 2005, the day before Katrina made landfall. The tape - withheld by the administration from Congress but obtained by the Associated Press along with seven days of transcripts of administration briefings - shows Bush and his Homeland Security chief being warned explicitly that the storm could cause levees to overflow, put large number of lives at risk, and overwhelm rescuers."

Fw: republican values (memorize these)
What You Need To Believe To Be A True Republican:
Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton.
Saddam was a good guy when Reagan armed him, a bad guy when Bush's daddy made war on him, a good guy when Cheney did business with him, and a bad guy when Bush needed a "we can't find Bin Laden" diversion.
Trade with Cuba is wrong because the country is Communist, but trade with China and Vietnam is vital to the spirit of international harmony.
The United States should get out of the United Nations, and our highest national priority is enforcing U.N. resolutions against Iraq.
A woman can't be trusted with decisions about her own body, but multi-national corporations can make decisions affecting all mankind without regulation.
The best way to improve military morale is to praise the troops in speeches, while slashing veterans' benefits and combat pay.
If condoms are kept out of schools, a dolescents won't have sex.
A good way to fight terrorism is to belittle our long-time allies, then demand their cooperation and money.
Providing health care to all Iraqis is sound policy, but providing
health care to all Americans is socialism. HMOs and insurance companies have only the best interests of the public at heart.
Global warming and tobacco's link to cancer are junk science, but creationism should be taught in schools.
A president lying about an extramarital affair is a impeachable offense, but a president lying to enlist support for a war in which thousands die and billions of dollars are wasted is solid defense policy.
Government should limit itself to the powers named in the Constitution, which include banning gay marriages, rescuing stem cells and censoring the Internet.
The public has a right to know about Hillary's cattle trades, but
George Bush's driving and military records are none of our business.
Being a drug addict is a moral failing and a crime, unless you're a conservative radio host. Then it's an illness and you need our prayers for your recovery.
What Bill Clinton did in the 1960s is of vital national interest, but what George Bush is now doing is irrelevant.
Support for hunters who shoot their friends and blame them for wearing orange vests similar to those worn by the quail.
Feel free to pass this on. If you don't send it to at least 10 other
people, we're likely to be stuck with more Republicans in '06 and '08.
Friends don't let friends vote Republican.
Jesus loves you, and shares your hatred of homosexuals and Hillary Clinton.

US plans strike to topple Iran regime
It is past time for this congress to impeach bush/cheney/rumsfeld before they do any further harm to the US or the rest of the world. This attitude of bomb now and ask questions later is bullshit and what makes them think they will be greeted by the Iranians with rose petals any more than the Iraqis did. And what makes them think even a 50 foot wall around the green zone in Baghdad would save that "outpost of democracy" from an Iranian missile? These people should be made to sit down and read "Hiroshima" by John Hersey. Taking the advice of one who lived through the era may provide a little historical perspective in this administration and might go a long way in changing some of their idiotic views.
Guardian Unlimited Special reports US plans strike to topple Iran regime - report: "It is a widespread belief in Washington's neo-conservative circles that a comprehensive air assault would disorient the Tehran government and galvanise the Iranian people into bringing it down. The departure of senior neo-conservatives from the administration after Mr Bush's 2004 re-election was thought to have weakened their clout, but Mr Hersh's report suggested that the president's personal convictions may yet prove decisive."

Leak case: Personal paybacks? -
"Let me just say something about leaks in Washington. There are too many leaks of classified information in Washington. There are leaks at the executive branch; there are leaks in the legislative branch. There are just too many leaks. And if there is a leak out of my administration, I want to know who it is. And if the person has violated law, the person will be taken care of." ---George Bush
Leak case: Personal paybacks? -:
According to Knight Ridder reports, the court documents stand as the hardest evidence to date that President Bush and vice-president Dick Cheney were "engaged in a campaign to disclose selected snippets of highly classified intelligence – much of it misleading, exaggerated or wrong – to a few trusted journalists in an effort to bolster their case for war."

Barbara Ehrenreich Salutes the French
Instead of bashing the French perhaps some of the displaced people from mass layoffs like at General Motors, Verizon and other huge U.S. corporations should start lobbing a few Molotov cocktails
Barbara Ehrenreich Salutes the French (from The Progressive's May issue) The Progressive: "What corporations call "flexibility"--the right to dispose of workers at will--is what workers experience as disposability, not to mention insecurity and poverty. The French students who were tossing Molotov cocktails didn't want to become what they call "a Kleenex generation"--used and tossed away when the employer decides he needs a fresh one."

Gonzales Suggests Legal Basis for Domestic Eavesdropping - New York Times: "Representative F. James Sensenbrenner Jr., the Wisconsin Republican who is chairman of the Judiciary Committee and one of the administration's staunchest allies, accused the administration of 'stonewalling.'
'Mr. Attorney General, how can we discharge our oversight responsibilities if every time we ask a pointed question, we're told that the answer is classified?' Mr. Sensenbrenner asked. 'Congress has an inherent constitutional responsibility to do oversight. We are attempting to discharge those responsibilities.'"

TomPaine.com - Ganging Up On Feingold
When the yellow belly democrats finally get the message that their base is only going to support those who have the balls to stand up for basic principles and those whose re-election campaign is based on getting out of Iraq they will sadly be losers once again. I'm putting my support behind those who have the guts to speak out against these criminals in power.

Now Feingold, with little support from his quaking Democratic colleagues, wants to censure the President…for authorizing wiretapping on American citizens that even many prominent Republicans believe is illegal—and unnecessary. Feingold wants the president to pursue real suspected members of Al Qaeda—not turn the U.S. into a police state.

Collateral damage my ass. The probe concluded that the civilians were in fact killed by Marines and not by an insurgent's bomb and that no insurgents appeared to be in the first two houses raided by the Marines. The probe found, however, that the deaths were the result of "collateral damage" rather than malicious intent by the Marines, investigators say.

Bush battered by US pessimism
A majority of Americans, 56 percent, believe Bush is "out of touch," the poll found. When asked for a one-word description of Bush, the most frequent response was "incompetent," followed by "good," "idiot" and "liar." In February 2005, the most frequent reply was "honest."

A deaf man spouting
On the eve of George Bush's presidential campaign in 2000, the neoconservative Kenneth Adelman cast him as Prince Hal, who "puts the indiscretions of his youth behind him" and "redeems his father's reign". After September 11, Bush was wreathed with regal laurels as Henry V by a clerisy of pundits. From Ground Zero to the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln ("Mission Accomplished") the president struck bold poses, but his choreographed gestures have especially illuminated his hollow crown in the darkened breach
Guardian Unlimited Special reports A deaf man spouting: "For the first time, last week, the public has seen the spontaneous Bush behind closed doors, in a leaked videotape that recorded his briefing the day before Hurricane Katrina struck. Teleconferenced in from his Crawford ranch, Texas, Bush listens to disaster officials inform him that the storm will be unprecedented in its severity and consequences. 'This is, to put it mildly, the big one,' says Michael Brown, director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Max Mayfield, director of the National Hurricane Centre, warns: 'This hurricane is much larger than Hurricane Andrew ever was.' Bush asks not a single question, says, 'We are fully prepared', and departs."

Finally, some of the boot lickers are getting fed up with bush and his cronies.
At Conservative Forum on Bush, Everybody's a Critic
Well, it could have been because of the first speaker, former Reagan aide Bruce Bartlett. Author of the new book "Impostor: How George W. Bush Bankrupted America and Betrayed the Reagan Legacy," Bartlett called the administration "unconscionable," "irresponsible," "vindictive" and "inept."
It might also have had something to do with speaker No. 2, conservative blogger Andrew Sullivan. Author of the forthcoming "The Conservative Soul: How We Lost It; How to Get It Back," Sullivan called Bush "reckless" and "a socialist," and accused him of betraying "almost every principle conservatism has ever stood for."

The US ambassador to Baghdad conceded yesterday that the Iraq invasion had opened a Pandora's box of sectarian conflicts which could lead to a regional war and the rise of religious extremists who "would make Taliban Afghanistan look like child's play".

More than half thought the US should start withdrawing its troops, although only one in six wanted all troops to be withdrawn immediately."

Bush Lies
ON THE DAY before Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, federal emergency officials warned President Bush that the hurricane could be "the big one," the storm the region had long feared; that the Superdome, the shelter of last resort in New Orleans, was below sea level and might well lose its roof; that medical and mortuary teams might not be prepared; and that the levees might not hold back the floodwaters. Mr. Bush, speaking during a videoconference, a tape of which was obtained by the Associated Press, responded by reassuring state officials that "we are fully prepared."
Caught on Tape: "It also should tell the nation something about the value of leadership. The Gulf Coast might have suffered less had the president just asked a few people the right questions."

At the National Institute of Fitness and Sport (NIFS) downtown, an undercover officer hung out, naked, in the mens shower and struck up several friendly conversations with fellow naked guys. In at least one instance, the officer began to chat up a fellow while the two were showering and the conversation became a little flirty. No offers of money were exchanged. No touching occurred. But when the perp got aroused during the conversation with the naked, soapy, sexy undercover officer, he got busted on charges of public indecency. Now the guy with the hard-on is facing a year in jail and a $5,000 fine."

White House Knew of Levee's Failure on Night of Storm and DID NOTHING. And we're all supposed to feel safer now.
"FYI from FEMA," said an e-mail message from the agency's public affairs staff describing the helicopter flight, sent Monday night at 9:27 to the chief of staff of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff and recently unearthed by investigators. Conditions, the message said, "are far more serious than media reports are currently reflecting. Finding extensive flooding and more stranded people than they had thought — also a number of fires."
White House Knew of Levee's Failure on Night of Storm - New York Times: "But the alert did not seem to register. Even the next morning, President Bush, on vacation in Texas, was feeling relieved that New Orleans had 'dodged the bullet,' he later recalled. Mr. Chertoff, similarly confident, flew Tuesday to Atlanta for a briefing on avian flu. With power out from the high winds and movement limited, even news reporters in New Orleans remained unaware of the full extent of the levee breaches until Tuesday.
The federal government let out a sigh of relief when in fact it should have been sounding an 'all hands on deck' alarm, the investigators have found."

Polly Toynbee: Cut a deal with the mullahs
Now the mad mullahs of Iran will soon have nuclear bombs, are we all doomed? Thumbing his nose at the impotent west, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad taunts us: "Our enemies cannot do a damn thing. We do not need you at all. But you are in need of the Iranian nation." And he is absolutely right. A frisson of panic shudders around the globe: he has already threatened to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth. Do something, someone! But what and who? And if there is nothing to be done, what then?
Guardian Unlimited Columnists Polly Toynbee: Cut a deal with the mullahs: "What's more, Iran is the true winner of that war. They only had to sit tight and smile as the west delivered on a golden plate all the influence Iran had always sought in the Middle East. The US and its allies will soon be gone from Afghanistan and Iraq, leaving Iranian-backed Shias dominant in both countries, their influence well spread across Syria, a chunk of Saudi Arabia and other countries for decades to come. Historic Iranian ambitions have been fulfilled without firing a shot while the US is reduced to fist-shaking. How foolish was that?"
